Professor Dr Zainuddin Abdul Manan is the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academics and International of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He is a professor of chemical engineering, the founding director of UTM Process Systems Engineering Centre (PROSPECT), and the founding Dean of the Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering of UTM. He received BSc from the University of Houston, USA, MSc from UMIST, UK, and PhD from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, all in Chemical Engineering.

Zain began his career as an engineer in PETRONAS and Hume Industries and has been an academic leader, educator, researcher, consultant and professional trainer for 25 years. He has completed over 100 R & D & consultancy projects, filed for fifteen patents and has more than 400 publications that include 15 books/chapters, 180 refereed journals and 200 conference papers on sustainable engineering of resources (energy, power, water, emissions & materials)(Scopus H-Index: 26, Google Scholar: 29). He is the co-author of the 2014 book on Process Integration and Intensification – Saving Energy, Water and Resources that is used across the world as textbook on Process Integration for resource savings.

Zain was the winner of the prestigious Prince Sultan Abdul Aziz International Prize for Water (2008) and was awarded as a Top Research Scientist of Malaysia by the Academy of Science of Malaysia (2013). In 2014, he received awards as UTM Top Researcher (Tokoh Penyelidik UTM), UTM Top Academician (Tokoh Akademik UTM) and the Pannonia Honorary Award from Hungary for spearheading numerous successful international collaboration projects.

Zain was the chair of the 6th Process Systems Engineering Asia International Conference (2013), and the 9th Regional Conference on Chemical Engineering (2016). He is also the chairman of the Global IChemE Medals and Prizes International Committee for Research into Computer-Aided Product and Process Engineering. For his global distinguished contributions in chemical engineering, particularly on research in process integration for energy and resource savings, Zain was sponsored by Imperial College of London to deliver the Imperial College Distinguished Chemical Engineering Lecture in 2014.

Zain was the vice-chairman of the Board of Judges for the ASEAN Energy Awards program for the commercial and industrial sectors, and appointed by OIC as the project director to develop Green Technology Blueprint for 57 OIC Countries (2014) and appointed as the OIC ambassador to the World Green Economy Summit (2014). He is the advisor for the Malaysian Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (MEGTW) on the development of Malaysia Energy Blueprint (2016). He is also the advisor for Malaysia Economic Planning Unit on the development of Malaysia RMK-11 Green Growth Blueprint. He is a national steering committee member for the Malaysia-Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Project (MyGLOMEEP), and the technical advisor for Malaysia Green Technology Corporation since 2006.

Zain is a chartered engineer, a certified energy manager, a registered electrical energy manager and the certified lead trainer for Malaysia energy managers. He has delivered more than 400 professional workshops, seminars and international plenary/keynotes and invited lectures and coached professionals from more than 500 organisations. Zain spearheaded the UTM Sustainable Energy Management initiative that saw UTM achieved over USD 5 million energy savings between 2011 and 2016, and to win the ASEAN Energy Award in 2012.


Prof Zain’s passion-driven, visionary, systematic and yet down-to-earth leadership style has made him the founding dean of the UTM Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering (from 2015), the longest-serving Dean of Faculty of Chemical Engineering (2010-2015), and Head of UTM Chemical Engineering Department to date (2000 to 2007). He leads by example and is resilient and unwavering in his pursuit of excellence, and is committed to his belief that people is the lifeline of an organization. His key focus in implementing the world-class university plan of action is human capital, team work and international networking. His responsiveness to change has led him to implement the Blue Ocean Strategy and techniques on Breaking Patterns to discover, exploit and project the niche of his organization in the face of global competition.

Dr Zainuddin is also instrumental in commercialisation as well as in outsourcing research and academic fundings from local and international agencies. He has founded the UTM spin-off company, Optimal Systems Engineering Sdn Bhd and commercialized four software products i.e. Optimal Heat ©, Optimal-Water ©, Optimal-Audit and e-SMART, dedicated for energy and water conservation in overall plant energy audit and energy efficiency improvement. His products has received various prestigious national and international awards including silver and gold medals in the Malaysian Science and Technology Expo (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2011, 2013, 2015) and silver medal in International Geneva Exhibition in 2003. His products have also won the 1st prize among more than 200 entries nationwide in the National Business Plan Competition organized by UTM and the Multimedia Development Competition (MDC) in 2006.

Dr Zainuddin has been extensively involved as a consultant, researcher and advisor for more than 100 projects for companies and governments agencies at national and international levels on process and product design and improvement projects with emphasis on energy and water conservation involving petrochemicals, fine chemicals, semi-conductor, pulp and paper, food production industries as well as buildings, locally and abroad.

He is also an experienced instructor for professional courses related to chemical, process and energy engineering, having taught over 500 national and multi-national organisations. The signature courses which have made him the main reference among industrial practitioners nationally and internationally include “Energy Manager Certification”, “Sustainable Energy Management” and “Maximising Energy and Water Cost Savings in Process Industries Using Pinch Analysis”.
