Mohd Ariffin obtained his first degree in chemical engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and was awarded the ESSO medal. He performed his Maste Degree (Engineering Management) in UTM in 1998 abd obtaining his Ph.D in 2004 at UMIST in the Environmental Technology Centre, Chemical Engineering Department. He then returned to Malaysia to take up a position as a Lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He is a well known and innovative, energetic, versatile in academic, research and development as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teachings.

His research interest is in the area of wastewater treatment. In particular he is concerned with the environmental aspects of chemical and biological processes for cleaning up wastewaters from industries. In the area of wastewater treatment, biological processes are increasingly being used to deal with organic pollutants. However, when the organic species are toxic, or their concentration is too high, biological processes can be difficult to employ successfully. The emphasis of Ariffin’s work is to investigate the application of Integrated Chemical-Biological Processes for industrial wastewater treatment. The Chemical Pre-Treatment includes coagulation and flocculation processes, Wet Air Oxidation (catalytic and non catalytic) and Fenton treatment.
