Background

Dr Ani Idris, is currently a Professor in the Department of Bioprocess Engineering, Faculty of Chemical Engineering at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia for 23 years and has carried out researches in the the Field of Membrane Technology and Fermentation, Nanotechnology and Ferrofluids. Since then, she has headed and secured numerous projects worth more than RM 2 million for the last 5 years some of which are listed as follows:

  1. Production of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from Oleaginous thraustochytrid microalga using the novel nano farming technology. RM 90,000.

  2. Microwave Assisted Enzymatic synthesis of poly (D,L and L,L Lactide) in Ionic liquids (GUP). RM 57400.

  3. Production of Bioplastic; Polylactic Acid (PLLA) from Cellulosic Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB) (MOA Technofund). RM 900,000.

  4. Micro-Biodiesel From High Lipid Microalgae Strains Using Heterotrophic Bioreactor (GUP Fund). RM 170,000.

  5. Production of HFFR membranes (UCIP Cradle fund). RM 150,000.

  6. Production of PLLA from Lactic Acid (FRGS). RM77,000.

  7. Synthesis of reactive membranes based on magnetic nanoparticles and bacteria for biologic depollution (FRGS). RM96000.

  8. Development of reactive membranes based on nanoparticles for water treatment (E-Sci 79186 ). RM 300,000.

  9. High performance blended membranes using a novel preparation techniques (E-Sci 79037). RM 188,000.

  10. Production of composite hollow fiber membranes for bioseparation (IRPA 74170). RM 189,000.

Dr Ani’s research centers on the membrane technology: Making of reverse osmosis membranes/ultrafiltration membranes/nanofiltration membranes/ thin composite membranes, downstream separation process using membranes for desalination purposes, treatment of waste water, and also biological process streams during her early years of research. Since then her research area has diversified to biotechnology involving fermentation processes in lactic acid, biomass and microalgae using both free and immobilised cells.

She has published over 100 papers relating to her research area. She has also won several awards, amongst them a gold and silver medal award in the 2010 Malaysian Technology Exhibition, a gold and silver medal award in the Seoul International Invention Festival 2011, 2010 and 2009, best researcher award 2010 and best international journals in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 consecutively. She was previously the Academic Manager (Research) in the School of Graduate Studies in 2009 – 2010 and was the Head of the Bioprocess Downstream Processing Laboratory for several years (2005-2009). She had also been the Head of the Thermodynamics Laboratory in 1995 an 1996.

Over the years she has also translated 5 books and has helped held many international conferences, She has been appointed secretary and member of the technical commitees responsible for edition of proceedings in some of these conferences.
